Want to start a game without going in circles for ten minutes debating the rules? Here’s the step-by-step guide that lets you set the table, explain the rounds in 60 seconds, and avoid trouble. The Pyramid is an ultra-social drinking game where memory and bluff are worth more than your cards. Follow this manual and your evening goes from hazy to fluid, without breaking the rhythm.

The Pyramid, the sipping bluffing game explained

The principle is clear: a card pyramid is revealed line by line. With each card that comes out, you can claim to have the same value in hand to distribute sips. The heart of the game is your poker face. We play to make others doubt, to trap, and to protect your real information when penalties rise. Result: a simple mechanic, a tension that builds, and an atmosphere that carries everyone along, from 3 to 10 players, ideally 4 to 6.

Important: it’s a drinking game, not a marathon. The objective remains to have fun. If someone doesn’t want to drink, they don’t drink. You can substitute with water or a non-alcoholic beverage without changing the spirit.

Equipment and setup in 2 minutes

Nothing complicated, and that’s why we pull it out all the time at home, for a pre-game or on weekends.

  • 1 deck of 52 cards (no jokers)
  • 3 to 10 players (sweet spot: 4 to 6)
  • Glasses and a table with space
  • Optional: a timer for a speed version

Then set up the table as follows: each player receives 4 face-down cards, which they can look at only once before putting them back in front of them. In the center, you build the pyramid with 5 cards at the base, then 4, 3, 2, 1 at the top (15 cards). The dealer handles the setup and will turn the cards from left to right.

Règles de la Pyramide pas à pas

  1. The dealer flips the first card of the base.
  2. After each reveal, anyone can announce that they have the same value in hand to target a player and make them drink (see the ladder below).
  3. The target chooses: accept and drink… or accuse of bluff.
  4. If an accusation is made and the announcement was true, the attacker shows their card: the target drinks the double.
  5. If an accusation is made and it was a lie, the attacker drinks the double.
  6. If you possess several cards of the revealed value, you can chain several announcements.
  7. We climb back up the pyramid to the top. End of round when all 15 cards have been revealed.
Row Number of cards Penalty per announcement
Base (row 1) 5 1 sip
Row 2 4 2 sips
Row 3 3 3 sips
Row 4 2 4 sips
Top (row 5) 1 down it in one go (or 5 sips)

You’ve got it: the risk increases with height. Bluffing low is a small gamble. Bluffing at the top is all or nothing.

Bluff and memory techniques that make the difference

The smart plan is to build your credibility at the start of the round. On the base and line 2, alternate truths and small bluffs. You create uncertainty without putting yourself in great danger. Keep your “clean” confirmations for line 4 and the top: a legitimate match at this level hurts a lot and often reverses the table’s dynamic.

Smart targeting. Continuing two attacks in a row on the same person can push them to accuse out of spite. This forced tilt gives you easy points if you were right. Conversely, if you’re seen hesitating too long, you expose yourself: prepare your announcements while the card turns.

Memory side, use simple anchors. Mentally categorize your 4 cards by suits (red/black) then by values (low/high). Pair a visual cue (“two red, two black; face cards to the left”). This routine lets you retrieve the info quickly without re-checking, which is forbidden.

Reading the others: observe micro-delays. Confident players rarely look at their cards when they announce. A long exhale or a shifty look at the moment of a big penalty often betrays the lie. But don’t rely on a single signal: look for consistency with their previous announcements.

Golden rule: vary your pace and your level of certainty. An effective bluff resembles your usual truth. And vice versa.

Gérer les litiges sans casser l’ambiance

Several players can announce on the same revealed card. It’s not “first come, first served.” The dealer plays like everyone else, and can obviously be targeted. If two people accuse a player and he was telling the truth, both drink double; if he was lying, they were right both.

Classic mistake: misidentifying the card while trying to defend yourself. Even if it’s a memory lapse, it’s treated as a failed bluff. Accept the penalty and we move on; the smooth flow of the game matters more than having the last word.

Final handy reminder: you never re-check your cards during the round. It’s precisely the constraint that makes the game so good and that values your memory.

Variants to change the rhythm

When the group has mastered the base version, a few twists revive interest without unnecessarily complicating things.

Grande Pyramide (6 lignes) — Base of 6, then 5-4-3-2-1 (21 cards). Deal 5 to 6 cards per player. More opportunities to bluff, more rounds, and a hard-hitting end game.

Mode speed “F*** You” — The dealer reveals with a countdown of 5 seconds. Players slam the corresponding card on the table before zero. No accusations: it’s pure reflex, loud and ultra-dynamic.

Pyramide inversée — We start from the top (max penalties) and descend. Immediate tension, a lighter finish. Perfect if you want a punchy start.

Losange de la mort — Diamond layout (1-2-3-4-3-2-1). The sips are doubled by default. To be reserved for groups who really want to push social pressure and bluff to the end.

Quand lancer une partie, durée et taille idéale du groupe

The Pyramid works wonderfully in a pre-game: a round lasts 10 to 15 minutes, you can chain two or three without diluting the vibe. At home, it’s the safe bet when you’re 4 to 6, because the time between two turns stays short and everyone has their window to bluff.

At 8-10 players, go for the Grande Pyramide and a steady reveal pace. Avoid going over 10: waiting time grows and the tension drops. While traveling or camping, it’s the “zero gear” option that works even on a wobbly table.

Astuces d’expert pour un flow de partie impeccable

Set the house rule before you start: “Top = down it in one go or 5 sips?” Choose and stick to it. Also establish a “top 3 seconds” for announcements, to avoid strategic delays. If you like the tension, declare that every blatant hesitation by the target is worth +1 sip.

Optimize your hand: if you have duplicates (e.g., two Kings), mentally note the most profitable value to keep for the top. And never forget the element of surprise: a certain, low-stake announcement can pave the way for a huge move later.

Finally, keep the table’s energy up. Turn too long? Switch to automatic reveals every 6 seconds. Too many sterile accusations? Add a small tax for accusers who keep getting it wrong. This little metronome keeps the flow of the game.

Rappels santé et modération

Alcohol is dangerous for health. We play responsibly: alternate with water, eat, choose low-alcohol drinks, offer a 100% soft version for those who want it, and above all, we do not drive. The right to “pass your turn” is absolute. Fun first, always.

Ready to play? Build your first pyramid now

Express recap: deal 4 cards per player, build a pyramid 5-4-3-2-1 face-down, look at your cards once, then reveal from bottom to top. On each card, announce if you have the same value, target a player, accept the accusation… or sign a clean bluff. Keep your certainties for the higher rows, give the table room to breathe with a good rhythm, and enjoy yourselves.
